Thad Pemberton came up in Gainesville in the 90′s when it was a hotbed for dance music culture. Being that everyone from back then was a talent in the own rights. Thad is a DJ’s DJ. Thad spent years developing his own taste and is a firm believer in the fact that if you truly love what you play,, the people who hear you will love it too. Thad does not play to be known. Thad plays because he love the music and it is one of the main factors in how he has been able to find balance in life. As in life, spinning records is all about BALANCE. Having played wit this guy on several occasions i can assure you that this is one session not to be missed. I really enjoy listening to this guy play. His knowledge of House is unlike anyone I know. A true believer in the movement and a developmental role in my life. I am pleased to have Thad Pemberton as a guest for Mcast.

Well as the tittle states, these are the busy times, right now Listen:React has become en entity of its own, not only as the this amazing podcast, but also as a well established promoting company that has just been striving with success. So as you would imagine, my available time to work on the things that i love, such as music, has been reduced dramatically, buuut, as i always been a very responsible man(.,…sigh) i have to deliver!

So for you my friends i give you one dj/producer that has been just on fire for the last couple of years, with releases all over the underground spectrum and some of the most impressive dj and live sets, my friends, i give you:::

Mikael Stavostrand(SunsetDiskos/GetPhysical/Spectral)

Mikael Stavostrand has been lauded as a key figure of the Swedish electronic music scene for his unique interpretations of minimal club techno as well as for producing some of the most essential experimental electronic music of the past years. Stavöstrand mixes deconstructed sounds with funky little beats to create minimal dance textures. On his debut album on Force Inc., “Reduce”, swarms of glitches, crackles and skips infiltrate the 4/4 drive formula of minimal techno. As Vita, his “Vita” 12″ on Force Inc. imprint Force Labs was welcomed by critical praise and became one of the best selling releases with its digitalized organic groove.

He started to produce music in the early nineties, but back then he was a part of the industrial scene and released some now labeled as “classic” records under different names. Lately due to a lot of demand from different labels, he agreed to allow reissues of these early works.

After that period he got more interested into sound research and minimalism, which also led to a couple of CD releases on labels as Staalplaat in The Netherlands to name a few. In 2000 he became more focused on bringing his experiences and sound from the pure minimal scene into a more club context, so he started to work with minimal techno sounds, which immediately resulted with releases on Force Inc. in Germany.

He has released over 40 12″ Ep’s and 19 Albums (CD, DLP, LP) so far and he has been featured on many compilation and mix records. He is also a sought after as a remix artist.

The last years he has been playing live around the world at respected clubs such as Fabric, Panorama Bar, Avalon, Weekend, Watergate, Fuse, Otto Zuts, Batofar, Rex, Cargo, Cocoliche, Mandarine, Mighty, Arma, Mutek, Decibel, Resolute, King King, 222, Brancaleone and many more.

Between 2000 to 2007 he ran the record label Mitek. Mitek’s aim was to produce and promote upcoming Swedish talents in the field of electronic music. In the years Mitek produced 22 records with different kinds of electronic music, from avant-garde to club. Mitek often received grants from The Swedish Art Council to produce the records.

In the summer of 2006 he also started his new label “Sunset Diskos”. This label is purely for club music and deep, funky minimal tunes are the aim here. With artists such as himself, [a]pendics shuffle, agaric & Bulgur Brothers, Pheek and Franco Cinelli.

Now he has released by Highgrade [DE], Kindisch/Get Physical [DE], Spectral Sound [US], Minisketch [IT], Adjunct [US], Lick My Deck [UK], Sounderground [UK] We Are [SE], Sushitech [UK], Thema [US] and others, with more exciting prospects on the way soon.

He has licensed tracks for Fabric mix CD’s (Audion & Steve Bug), mix cd’s by James Holden, Tanja Vulcano, Steve Bug, Agoria and more. His music is heavily played by Dj’s such as Matthew Dear, MANDY, Steve Bug, Alexkidd, Claude Von Stroke, Ricardo Villalobos, DJ T, Ryan Elliot, Jeff Samuel, Tanya Vulcano, Marco Carola, Dinky, Butane, Jeff Milligan, Dubfire, Troy Pierce, Magda, Ryan Crosson, Mark Henning, Miss Fitz, and Jay Haze to name a few.

Dennis’ interest in music began early on in his life. While he discovered all kinds of music throughout the years, he developed more and more of an interest in the details, what lay beyond the music other than just a few minutes of sound. He started to ask himself what musical direction perfectly reflected himself and his nature. The many different aspects of the progressive sound fascinated him. The rough but also clear, energetic and atmospheric sound is his musical expression.

But purely listening to music without looking further into this art didn’t satisfy him at all. He finally began to create mixtapes in his bedroom with inexpensive second-hand equipment, spending hours every day DJing and exploring new music. While attending EDM events all over Germany and Holland he met Michael McLean. After a few conversations, they noticed that their taste and thoughts on music were so similar, so why not start a collaboration?! And so in 2003, “Progressive Interpretation” was born.

The Magnus effect is the phenomenon whereby a spinning object flying in a fluid creates a whirlpool of fluid around itself, and experiences a force perpendicular to the line of motion. The overall behaviour is similar to that around an aerofoil (see lift force) with a circulation which is generated by the mechanical rotation, rather than by aerofoil action.

In many ball sports, the Magnus effect is responsible for the curved motion of a spinning ball. The effect also affects spinning missiles, and is used in rotor ships and Flettner aeroplanes.

This episode consists of a unique and powerful structure, emulating and combining some of the hottest and finest tunes into a massive atmosphere, harder and darker than ever!

Dear friends,

It has been quite some time, I know… I’ll spare you the excuses and just talk about the mix.

I’m most known for techy to minimalish house stuff, but I’ve actually covered the range of electronic sounds over the course of my EDM education. I started out at the end of high school listening to DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, and Boards of Canada. I came of age in college listening to Mushroom Jazz and lots of other things on OM records. I delved into deep house and even had some Naked Music CDs (maybe more than I should be admitting). The first EDM record I bought was a Drum n Bass cut. Along the way, I also purchased loads of progressive music.

This mix happens to feature that progressive portion of my upbringing, as it dates back from early 2006. I was putting together a new mix when I happened to come across it. There’s something to it as I listen back to those years, and so I thought I’d put it up for all to hear. I thought it might be amusing to some to hear a deep, fast progressive mix coming from me.

This is an all vinyl mix, and I don’t have a tracklist… I recognize the first tune as Shmuel Flash’s classic “Chilling Moments” track from the illustrious Bedrock label. After that, from what I can still recognize, you’ve got an assortment that includes Chris Micali, Pig & Dan, Ozgur Can, Introvert (Jukka Varis), Dousk, Kosmas Epsilon, Sasha, and I think even a Junkie XL track in there – plus a few more whose names elude me right now. Those of you who grew up following progressive will recognize quite a few of these tunes as there are some great ones in there.

So there you have it… I hope you enjoy going back in time with this selection. We’ll get back to the present with the next mix.

Made this mix recapping recent set i played on boat party in Tampa Fla. Was really influenced by new sound introduced to me by artists such as Afrilounge. Mix starts pretty minimal and goes through different genres before building to a more peak hour sound.Hopefully you will enjoy as much as i do.

Rhythmatic Sessions 010 on MCast – June 2010

So, every now and again on my show I like to take time to recognise and showcase a mix from one of my many talented friends, label mates etc. This month I’d like to draw your attention to two very talented DJ’s, Navi and M.E.E.K.O., also known as Min//Max. They put together an exclusive mix for Rhythmatic Sessions, and I’m proud to host this set. Check it out and by all means let us know what you think!

Here are a few words about Nick and Ivan aka Min//Max:

Both Navi and M.E.E.K.O. have their own styles and have played individually at many venues and events over the years. It wasn’t until March of 2009 when Min//Max was formed. Navi, who’s style is originally more minimal and M.E.E.K.O., who’s style is much more maximal, decided to become a duo and perform out live as ONE unit. Together these two notable dj’s combine to create a unique sound. This sound is what they call “T.H.E. Sound” (Techno.House.Electronic). They feed off of each others energy and have a knack for taking their listeners on a journey. Now that they have a growing feel for each others style, Min//Max plan on taking this musical partnership to the next level.

Following the reaction concerning our previous “Alternative Nemesis” session on [PTE-017], I mean daaaaamn…- the reaction from the listeners blew in ALL directions, and that was pretty hilarious from where I stand – so I would like to clarify depicting this, as follows:
Q.: Is it true Ma’am that you experiment music mixes and dark stuff on your show?
A.: Hummm…well no Sir, here we just hold hands, sit under the sun and sing [we are the world...]

(Hell yea we try MuZik stuff @ PTE!!!!)

Many amazing artists produce amazing muzik in different genres, but they never get to exhibit their work coz it’s ambient/psy or alternative etc… Well, although this show remains a [DARK PROGRESSIVE]-based show, we don’t mind opening the way to “Alternative Mixes” that includes everything within the MuZiK world, we don’t mind bending the rules or even breaking them as long as it is done with a certain “organized muzikal logic and harmony”…and we love to dare!
In our view, a good set is not about mixing the latest sounds only, but digging within the muzik universe.
Having said that, now I move on to introduce this PTE-018 session, which is dedicated to the “resilient” Dark Proggy lovers, my most beloved ones, whom I felt were left down in PTE017.
So I am hereby making it up for ya with a good dose of Dark Proggy:

They have amazing sandy beaches, the sun….
But what about the muzik they party on?
Here is an amazing Dj/Producer (and friend) we are very glad to have on our show, the type of artist we like: KAN!!!

His Bio:

Lost in the middle of the indian ocean, Kan was born in 1985 on the island of Mauritius.
At the age of 10, he discovers trance music through a compilation brought from Europe,
with tracks like Jaydee – Plastic Dreams or BBE – 7 days and one week.
It was amazing for him to see how the sound could evoke so much feelings and paint
such landscape.

On his own, he goes deeper in the sound and encounters the Global Underground
label’s compilations. He discovers progressive with the warm and sexy, house rythms and
the hypnotic and groovy vibes of tribal. The exposure to different cultural scenes and
practices of Mauritius makes him feel this music like part of a ritualism.

He started mixing at various private parties and nightclubs. At the same time, he made
his way through music production and edited Ableton live sets broadcasted on
dark progressive shows of various net radios.

Kan is part of the Lebanon based, Beattunes music site and hosts a show known as its “Dark Side”.
Spreading the dark juice to over thousand of fans, presenting mixes of famous and upcoming
artists all over the world that share the passion for dark atmospheres through abstraction.

He defines his music like a representation of feelings of life, not always bad, not always good, it can be dramatically changing or driving into a rythm that you want to never end,
it is rich and formless.
A deep listening is required to listen the progression and beauty of his soundscapes.

Terminal Velocity 013 On MCast May 2010 – Part1 Panoulix

Hello and welcome to the thirteenth edition of Terminal Velocity.

This month I tried to prove an experiment of reversing the mood in the tracklist of a mix.

The experiment goes as follows:

Firstly, each track is carefully selected according to the artist’s mood and feelings. (Nothing strange on this step.)

Secondly, a nice and smooth mixing, is done under a specific mood that matches the selected tracklist. It is virtually impossible for example for anybody to mix easy listening tracks when they are angry or stressed… (Nothing strange on this step too.)

Lastly an attempt is made of reversing the tracklisting from the final mood to the starting mood. In other words, in a tracklist of 10 tracks, track 01 swaps with track 10, track o2 with track 09 and so on… (Well, that’s f**king weird huh?)

And now the results… The mood is driven under the same way, no matter if the journey started from where it should be normally ending!

Think about it for a while. It’s not weird at all! That’s the circle of life and mood. Working pretty much the same on everybody. That’s the meaning of ‘Universalis’…

OK, now to part 2 of our musical endeavor, today being Cinco de Mayo, i do have a legitimate reason to celebrate, one because im of Mexican descent, and two, because i went to elementary school in Mexico, so we did celebrate the day every year, obviously not as profusely as Americans do, but hey, that was Mexicans being Mexicans, which brings me back to the question, why do Americans celebrate other peoples holidays more than they celebrate their own, i mean, St. Patricks Day? Cinco de Mayo? Mardi Grass?? c’mon fellow Americans! get your own holidays, we don’t celebrate the 4th of July in Mexico, or Thanksgiving…….well, not that we would want to celebrate them, both of them are boring, i mean, just look at Cinco de Mayo, its all about getting drunk, just like St. Patricks day, who gives a flying fuck about baking a turkey or deep frying the stupid bird, shiit, all i care is about beer, maybe some nachos, now, if thanks giving would be all about the nachos, then i would be on board, but turkey?? cmon now……yeah i know on the 4th of july you get to have a cookout, grill some hotdogs, some pork chops………are you kidding me?? we do that shit every week! that is how we roll!! im telling you my friend, if you’re in need of some serious partying, get yourself a Mexican friend, just like Kat Williams said, “them motherfuckers dont know how to stop”……….Ok, lets not get sidetracked and get back to zee serious business, first i will give you my beer of the month, and yes to all of you haters, it its a Mexican beer:::

Ahhhh yes, the good ol Tecate, one of Mexico’s “better” beers, granted, Corona being the king of mexican beers(i totally disagree with that claim, since Corona has to be one of the weakest beers in the market).

Well, actually im not really a fan of Tecate, ill drink a couple here and there with some salt and lime, but thats about it, i would much rather drink some Stellas or New Castles, but today being Cinco de Mayo i had to represent my Mexican heritage and just take one for the team. Here is for you my beloved Mexico.

Part2 continues with a very nice guest mix made by my friend DjDuma, known in Kavala & Thassos (Greece), for his dark sounds.

DJ Duma was born in 1986 in Greece. He was raised on the small island of Thassos
where he also currently lives. He started becoming interested in music at the age of
14 and 2 years ago he started producing music. His genres are Progressive House
and Deep Dark Progressive. He has played music in local clubs. The person who
helps him quite a few times in his productions is a very good friend of his, Rezo, who
always supports him.

Terminal Velocity 012 On Mcast April 2010 – Part3 Stratos DeepDark

For the last part of April’s episode, Stratos DeepDark travels us to Dark Progressive sounds performed under his interesting and special style.

Stratos Deep Dark was born in 1984 in Greece. He started getting interested in music at the age of 14
and started getting addicted to Progressive House at that time as well. In 2000 he moved to Kavala
and got himself into Progressive Melodic House with Deep Dark Tribal And Vocal Elements. The Global Underground Series was a great start for him. In 2003 he Saw The Dj Moshic Live in Kavala and after
that day Moshic has inspired Stratos Deep Dark up until now. Stratos DeepDark has also been inspired by great DJs & Producers
such as Kintar,Rezo,Domased Electronica,Hypnotic Duo,Robert K and many others.He has played music at local Clubs.
The first big support came from Rezo and Robert K which are very good friends of his. He is still serving this style
Of Deep Dark Underground Progressive with extreme diligence.

Greetings all! Welcome back to another edition in my little worldly musical corner.

As we finish up March and 25% of this year already (wow!), for many of us spring has finally sprung and we can now shake ourselves from the snow and cold.

For the past couple of years locally, I’ve made mixes entitled “Early Spring In The Step.” Thought I’d translate this over to here, since these mixes should get you going nicely and into the better weather.

Part 1; well, back into the nice upbeat, funky house grooves…featuring the recent EP from Dominic Martin I’m digging (and many others!) that came out a few months ago and then ending on a nice drummy note.
